World-famous people of Belarusian origin

Tuesday, 18 March 2014 14:41
famous people from belarus

Somehow there are not so many world-famous people here in Belarus. Our singers or, say, actors are not so widely known on the world stages. Unfortunately, not much is known about our scientists, journalists or politicians as well. They may be famous within the country but not well heard of abroad.

The exception here is, probably, our sportsmen who after the Winter Olympics in Sochi helped other nations learn something about our country. Now they are world-famous. The thing is that there are lots of Belarusian emigrants or people with Belarusian roots who are now extremely popular not only on the world artistic stage but also on the political and scientific ones. They had to immigrate for various reasons: the World War 1, the World War 2 (many people immigrated to the USA during these times, especially the ones of Jewish origin), religious or money matters and so on. And you may not even know they are from our country. So we have prepared a list of such names for you. Get ready. You are sure to be surprised.

We will begin with Harrison Ford, an American film actor and producer. He is famous for his performance in the original “Star Wars” trilogy and the title character of the “Indiana Jones” film series. His career has spanned six decades and includes roles in many Hollywood blockbusters. And, in fact, Ford’s maternal grandparents were Jewish immigrants from Minsk.

The next person to be mentioned here is Ralph Lauren, an American fashion designer. He's best-known for his clothing brand, and a global multi-billion-dollar enterprise. Although he was born in Bronx, New York his parents are Jewish immigrants from Pinsk, Belarus.

Another famous person, born in this very city is S. Kuznets. He was an American economist, statistician, demographer who won the 1971 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences.

There is one more person from Belarus who has won a Nobel Prize but in Physics. He is Zhores Alferov and he was born in Vitebsk.

You may not believe, but Simon Peres, the ninth and current President of the state Israel is also from Belarus. He is a really prominent politician. Peres served twice as the Prime Minister of Israel and twice as Interim Prime Minister, and have been a member of 12 cabinets in a political career spanning over 66 years. At the age of 90, he is currently the world’s oldest Head of State. He was born in a small town Vishnyeva.

The founder of the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and “Oscars” Academy Award, Louis Burt Mayer, is also our fellow countryman. He was born in Minsk but moved to Los Angeles later on in his life.

There are many more people who have Belarusian roots or who have been born here. Mark Chagall, a world-famous artist who was born in Vitebsk. Isaac Asimov, one of the most prolific writers of all time, and Larry King, an extremely popular and scandalous television and radio host whose work has been recognized with various awards.

As you see, we can boast talents which added something to the world culture, science and politics developments.
